Interview with Symfinity So here are the questions I asked and answers from Seann This is really fun and you'll get some good laughs too so thank you Seann How did you all meet? I met Crystal at NYU, John through brother at NYU, and Lynette and Rob we miraculously found through Craigslist which almost never works. What was hard about creating this band? Finding people that were serious. I spent years trying to make a band with different musicians. I eventually gave up, started writing and arranging songs myself, planned to make a CD (which became Intangible Dreams) and figured that musicians would eventually show up if I promoted it enough. As a kid what bands/singers inspired you? Probably whatever was on the radio, but I don't really remember. I was very much a classical musician and I was very influenced by Chopin, Rachmaninoff and film scores. I also liked classic rock like Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Pat Benatar, and Led Zeppelin. Influenced you? That being said, I think I think I was probably more influenced by Nirvana and later on, Staind and Metallica. Influence/inspire now? Some time after I got serious about songwriting, Evanescence came into the picture and I discovered Lacuna Coil and The Gathering and symphonic metal bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation. It was from there and having learned how to orchestrate that I realized that I could give my songs and orchestral sound. Out of the songs you wrote/played which is your favourite? I really like a song called Halfway that will be on the next album as well as the final track of the next album. From our music that has been released though, I would say that My Hidden Manor is my favorite with Night Through Day as a close second. Least favourite? Probably Growing Younger. It's on an album called Apocrypha for a reason because it's not my usual style. I threw it on the album as an afterthought without putting much effort into it. That being said, it made the album and on a complete whim we made a video for it that people seem to love, so I can at least respect that! What is your favourite song from other bands? From other bands? Like the worst song anyone has ever made? The worst song I've ever heard is Lip Gloss by Lil' Mama (although I'm not even sure if that classifies at a song). The worst song I've ever heard a band do is Photograph by Nickelback. I didn't hate them like most of the world, UNTIL THEY DID THAT SONG. What song do you despise? I guess I've already covered this question. Although I have to say, whenever I hear Don't Stop Believing by Journey, I want to throw something, not because it's a horrible song, but because it's horribly overrated and overplayed. If you could redo a gig which one would it be? I would redo every gig in New York during 2009 and 2010. And the way I would redo them is by not doing them at all. Why? Because we weren't ready to play. We sounded awful and gave ourselves a local reputation among my friends that haunts us to this day. People don't know that I'm a vastly different singer that I was 4 years ago. They don't know that we don't have a drummer that changes tempo every two seconds. Opinions are just too hard to change. If you could play a gig or concert anywhere where would it be? The location doesn't matter. I just want to open for a well-known symphonic metal band like Nightwish or Within Temptation. Why? It would be the first largely relevant concert we've ever done. What advice would you give to your fans if they were creating a band? Write music. Don't worry about band mates too much because people always come and go. Just write songs and don't let anyone hold you back. And don't play shows unless you sound tight. You don't need to sound perfect, but you do need a drummer that won't scare people out of the bar. Do you get stage fright sometimes? I used to a lot, especially growing up playing classical music. There is nothing worse than playing Bach or Haydn on piano in front of a big crowd. With my band, I feel great. If I feel a little nervous, then it's good because it's part of the experience and that helps me give 110% at every show. If I'm nervous, I certainly don't notice it anymore, especially with a band behind me. If you could hang out and talk with someone from: the past, Present, Future or even fictional who would it be and why? Maybe Mozart. Musicians have it rough these days, but musicians have always had it rough! Mozart cranked out orchestra music in his head like it was completely natural to him. For me, when I hear a new song in my head, I hear the whole arrangement. To see an 18th-century composer use an electric guitar would be fascinating. Whats the hardest thing about being a musician? Two things. Getting people to come to your show. Especially in New York, this is really hard since you are competing with not just other musicians but all the hundreds of other cool things you can do in New York. In fact, I have more or less given up on this and tried my hardest for focus on the things that actually work well, like online promotion, music videos and small amounts of touring. And second, getting press. Getting album reviews has been tough for us. While we have built up a global fan base with a lot of enthusiasm, the blogger community is still ignoring us for some reason. Most important question Ninja, Unicorn, Dragon, Elf, Lepracon, All or None? Do elf ninjas exist? Because that would be awesome!
